Questions and answers regarding Metalworking

What is the difference between a soluble oil, a semi-synthetic fluid, and a synthetic fluid?

  • Soluble oil contains a relatively high proportion of oil and forms a milky emulsion when mixed with water.
  • A semi-synthetic fluid combines oil with synthetic components and offers a balance between cooling and lubrication.
  • A synthetic fluid generally contains no mineral oil and provides good cooling, cleanliness, and transparency.

How do you select a metalworking fluid?

Consider the machining operation, workpiece material, cutting speed, load, cutting tools, and required surface finish. It is also important to check compatibility with sensitive metals, the plant’s water supply, the machine, and the filtration system.
