Marine Lubricants

Questions and answers regarding Marine Lubricants

What is the difference between cylinder oil and system/crankcase oil in marine engines?

Large two-stroke marine diesel engines (crosshead engines) use two separate types of oil:

  • Cylinder Oil is injected directly onto the cylinder walls and is used to lubricate the piston and piston rings. It is designed to withstand high temperatures, reduce wear, and neutralize acids formed during combustion. Therefore, it typically has a high... a high TBN (Total Base Number) value (depending on the type of fuel).
  • System/crankcase oil circulates within the engine’s closed lubrication system and lubricates the crankshaft, bearings, connecting rods, and other engine components. This oil does not come into contact with combustion products, so its formulation is different and its TBN is significantly lower.

It is important to use each oil only for its intended purpose and in accordance with the engine manufacturer’s recommendations.

Does every marine engine require both cylinder oil and crankcase oil?

No. In marine diesel engines... two-stroke (crosshead) two separate oils are typically used—cylinder oil and crankcase oil. In contrast, in... ארבע פעימות (Trunk Piston Engines) a single engine oil is typically used to lubricate all engine components, including the cylinders and crankshaft. Therefore, it is important to select the appropriate oil according to the engine type, fuel type, and equipment manufacturer’s requirements.
